PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A man was taken to the hospital after police say he shot himself by mistake while trying to fend off a would-be burglar in north Phoenix early Thursday morning.
Phoenix police responded to the reported burglary around 5 a.m. in a neighborhood near 35th Avenue and Greenway Road. While officers were en route, they were told that the caller accidentally shot himself.
When police got to the scene, they learned that the man who lived there had grabbed his gun to stop the burglar from getting into the home. But in the process, the man reportedly shot himself by accident.
The man drove himself to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury, police said.
Phoenix PD said no forced entry was made into the home, but officers found “elements” of an attempted break-in.
This incident remains under investigation.
