NEW YORK — It’s do-or-die time for both the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, who are set to face off in a decisive Wild Card series Game 3 Thursday night.
Jazz Chisholm played a huge part in saving the Yankees’ season as they beat the rival Boston Red Sox 4-3 in Game 2 of their AL Wild Card Series.
The Bronx Bombers staved off elimination on Wednesday night with 4-3 victory in Game 2.
The dynamic Chisholm raced all the way home from first base on Austin Wells’ tiebreaking single in the eighth inning and made a couple of critical defensive plays that helped the Yankees stave off elimination.
“It’s what you expect. He’s a game-changer. He showed his maturity,” New York captain Aaron Judge said. “He showed up at the park today and had the biggest plays for us.”
Both teams will now turn to rookie starters to help propel them to the next round of the playoffs, where the winner will take on the Toronto Blue Jays.
Hard-throwing rookie Cam Schlittler (4-3, 2.96 ERA) will start for New York. The right-hander grew up in Boston, where he attended Northeastern University, but has said he always wanted to play for the Yankees.
Rookie left-hander Connelly Early (1-2, 2.33 ERA) will pitch for the Red Sox in place of injured Lucas Giolito. Early has made four major league starts since his debut on Sept. 9.
The excitement of a do-or-die Game 3 had Yankees and Red Sox fans talking head of the big showdown.
“I told him I had a little bit of PTSD because he’s got Schilling on the back of his jersey,” said Yankees fan Jerry Mezzina.
“Now we got all this young talent on both teams. We’ve got a deciding game. I’m just a little disappointed in the Red Sox that they made us travel here to the Bronx,” said Red Sox fan Henry Marsh.
