Trenton Falls Scenic Trails
TRENTON, N.Y. — Trenton Falls Scenic Trails will welcome visitors this weekend, offering a rare opportunity to explore the area’s natural beauty and historical significance.
Brookfield Energy, which owns the property, announced that the trails will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting.
The weather, though, couldn’t be nicer.
Both Saturday and Sunday will be sunny and dry, with temperatures in the 70s to as high as the low 80s toward the end of the weekend.
The trails feature scenic overlooks, wildlife observation areas, and views of the hydroelectric facilities.
Visitors can choose between a primary stone dust trail leading to the Trenton Falls Hydro Dam overlook and secondary wood mulch trails offering scenic vistas along the gorge.
The trails also highlight the area’s rich history, dating back to 1805 when John Sherman first visited Trenton Falls.
Over the years, the site became a popular destination, with notable developments such as the construction of Moore’s Hotel in 1851 and the Trenton Falls Hydroelectric facility in the early 1900s.
Geologists estimate the rocks in the Trenton gorge to be approximately 450 million years old, with abundant fossils like trilobites and other ancient creatures.
Trenton limestone has been used in local construction, including the Utica State Hospital and the Black River Canal locks.
The trails are open to the public only on specific dates, providing a unique chance to experience both the natural and historical wonders of Trenton Falls.
The Town of Trenton will provide volunteer trail guides, and refreshments will be available. However, dogs are not allowed on the trails.
If you wish to visit, the address for parking is 8526 Trenton Falls Rd., Barneveld, N.Y. 13304.
