San Diego’s food scene is buzzing this October, with new menus, big openings, early Halloween offerings, and even a healthier twist on a pantry staple. Here’s what’s happening:
Tacos El Franc Heads to the Gaslamp
San Diego taco lovers, get ready: one of Tijuana’s most legendary taquerias is coming to the heart of downtown. Michelin-recognized Tacos El Franc, known for sizzling adobada and mesquite-grilled meats, will open its second U.S. location in the Gaslamp Quarter on Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. at 528 Fifth Ave. The new spot follows the success of its first U.S. location at Westfield Plaza Bonita in National City, which continues to see lines out the door. “We’ve been blown away by the response to Tacos El Franc here in the U.S., and this new location is an exciting next step as we look towards expanding throughout California and into neighboring states,” said Roberto Kelly, co-owner of Tacos El Franc USA. Expect counter service, fast-moving lines, and the same bold Baja flavors that earned the taqueria its cult following south of the border when it sets down digs in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Encinitas’ popular Temaki Bar: Handroll, Sushi, Sake is now pouring a full cocktail menu to pair with its award-winning sushi rolls. Specialty drinks include a Lychee Martini, Moonlight Espresso Martini, Beacons Old Fashioned, and a refreshing Temaki Punch, all priced around $15–$16. The bar, located just steps from Moonlight Beach, was recently named Best of North County 2024 for both sushi and seafood.
