The barbastelle bat is among the rarest mammal species in the United Kingdom, but a person on a bicycle path stumbled across one of the elusive critters.
According to Burnham-on-Sea.com, the passerby came across the tiny creature, which appeared disoriented and exhausted. The individual sprang into action, carefully retrieving the bat and transporting it to Secret World Wildlife Rescue for care.
The team at Secret World was thrilled to receive the bat. “These bats are extremely rare, and seeing one up close is a once-in-a-career experience for many of our team,” a spokesperson for the wildlife center explained.
Barbastelle bats are adorable, with distinctive black fur, ginger guard hairs, and extremely large ears that meet in the center of their foreheads.
While a 1995 estimate placed the population of barbastelle bats in the U.K. at a scant 5,000, experts believe that the population has grown. However, the International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the species as vulnerable.
Thankfully, the little bat saved by the individual was uninjured. Secret World’s vet ran tests to determine how and why the bat became grounded, but it appeared to be healthy. The center hoped to return the animal to its natural habitat as soon as was feasible.
The quick actions of the passerby, along with the hard work Secret World put in to keeping the bat healthy and safe, are commendable. The species’ status means its safety is of the utmost importance; had the bat remained grounded, it might not have survived.
The successful rescue was also a poignant reminder of why conservation work is so crucial and how seemingly small interventions can have a massive impact.
“Rescues like this remind us why our work is so special. Every day brings new surprises, and sometimes they are truly extraordinary,” the spokesperson said.
