A beloved retail name in Fort Worth is opening a new storefront: Tandy Leather, a Fort Worth original and leader in leathercraft supplies, will open a new flagship store in the West 7th Corridor in the Artisan Circle development at 2973 Crockett St., in the former Terra Mediterranean restaurant space (which relocated down the street in December).
According to a release, the new store, which is currently under construction, will open in January 2026 — missing the Christmas season by a month.
In addition to selling merchandise, the new store will feature a workshop-style maker space with classes, quick DIY make-and-take projects, and private group events. The facade will include a garage door wall to open on nice days.
CEO Johan Hedberg says in a statement that it’s open both to seasoned makers as well as newbies.
“Whether you’re stopping by to personalize a keychain, make your own belt, or dive into a full workshop, the store invites the community to get creative, learn something new, and make something by hand,” Hedberg says.
Founded in Fort Worth in 1919 as the Hinkley-Tandy Leather Company by Dave Tandy and Norton Hinkley, Tandy Leather later became part of the Tandy Corporation under the leadership of Charles Tandy, helping to pioneer the growth of hobby and craft retail through its TandyCraft division.
Their trademark merchandise includes leather, leatherworking tools, buckles and adornments for belts, leather dyes and finishes, saddle and tack hardware, and do-it-yourself kits. Alas they do not currently offer vegan leather, which seems like a lost opportunity.
In January 2025, Tandy Leather sold its property at 1900 SE Loop 820 in Fort Worth—home to its corporate headquarters, distribution center, and Fort Worth retail store—to Colonna Brothers, Inc.
As part of this transition, the company relocated its headquarters to a facility in Benbrook in September. The current Fort Worth store, located at the former headquarters, will remain open through December, offering warehouse closeouts and limited-time deals throughout the holiday season.
With more than 100 stores across the U.S., Canada, and Europe, Tandy Leather operates the largest retail footprint in the leathercraft category—but Fort Worth remains its hometown.
