As the X-Men prepare to make their official Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, new rumors are beginning to circulate about which villains will be ready to oppose them. An insider teased two ‘big bad’ mutants reportedly making their way to the MCU, along with an exciting new Ryan Reynolds project.
Per The Game Post, Marvel insider Daniel Richtman shared on his paywalled Patreon page an update about where the MCU is headed with its upcoming mutant movies. The “next saga” will reportedly be built around two iconic X-Men villains after Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom wraps up Phase Six. It’s reported that Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse, two fan-favorite mutants, will be the main villains. Apocalypse has previously appeared in Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse, but this would mark his MCU debut, potentially spelling big trouble for the Marvel Universe at large.
“I hear once more Marvel’s main plans for [the] next saga are for Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse,” Richtman shared. Apparently, casting for either character has not been finalized at this time, although the studio has “some names they have in mind.”
Richtman also revealed a potentially exciting update involving Ryan Reynolds and his character of Deadpool. It is reported that Reynolds is developing his own mutant team-up movie for Marvel’s next saga, although it remains to be seen if it will spin out of Deadpool & Wolverine or be something that stands entirely on its own. It’s also entirely possible that Reynolds would simply take on a creative role, and Deadpool could not appear at all.
“Ryan Reynolds is making his own mutants team-up movie for [the] next saga,” Richtman wrote. It’s important for fans to keep in mind that, while Richtman is a well-known insider with a following, his information should be taken with a grain of salt, especially at such an early part of the process. Marvel’s plans could change in the future, especially with Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars still more than a year out.

For now, it remains to be seen if Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse will be making their MCU debuts in the near future. Both characters are well-known villains in the X-Men fandom, with Mr. Sinister originally appeared in 1987’s The Uncanny X-Men #221. The character is a supervillain who becomes obsessed with engineering humanity into a perfect race of superhumans, and he’s often portrayed as working closely with the villainous Apocalypse.
With Mr. Sinister as one of his key allies, Apocalypse remains an omega-level mutant threat fully capable of standing among the ranks of iconic Marvel villains like Thanos and Doctor Doom. Apocalypse is one of the world’s first mutants, is one of the most powerful beings in the entire Marvel Universe, and is the father of the original incarnation of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Born in Ancient Egypt thousands of years ago, Apocalypse was forced into slavery, but used his incredible powers to turn on his masters and become a godlike being worshiped around the world.
More details about Marvel’s X-Men plans are expected to emerge in the coming months.
