The Cream and Crimson scrimmage, an intrasquad game for Indiana at Assembly Hall on Friday, featured a showcase of 3-point shooting to have fans salivating for the start of the season.
After eight consecutive seasons of mostly anemic shooting from beyond the arc, new coach Darian DeVries’ first team hoisted 3s early and often in their first public showcase, draining 10 shots from long distance in 16 minutes of game time.
Sam Houston State transfer Lamar Wilkerson was the big star in that regard, draining four 3-pointers. West Virginia transfer Tucker DeVries, Troy transfer Tayton Conerway and freshman Trent Sisley hit two apiece.
Wilkerson scored 14 points and was matched as the game’s leading scorer by Florida transfer big man Sam Alexis. Davidson transfer Reed Bailey, another post, notched 12 points.

The game was cut short when North Florida transfer guard Jasai Miles went down with what appeared to be cramps. Darian DeVries made the decision to stop play then, but he and the players made sure to hang around and interact with fans afterward.

The teams for the scrimmage seemed to be more or less starters against reserves. Wilkerson, Tucker DeVries, Conerway, Bailey and DePaul transfer Conor Enright played for one team. That is a plausible starting lineup for the Hoosiers. Sisley later switched teams and ran with that first group, another in a long line of indications that the Santa Claus native is likely to play a significant role for IU this season.
Hoosier Hoops on Kirkwood
The scrimmage came the night after IU held a new event, which it dubbed Hoosier Hoops on Kirkwood. The athletic department constructed a makeshift basketball court on Kirkwood Avenue on Thursday night, giving onlookers a chance to watch the proceedings from several of the bars in the area.

The night was, almost unquestionably, a rousing success. Darian DeVries endeared himself to the onlookers by buying everyone a round at Upstairs Pub and Sisley provided the highlight of the night by sinking a shot from a balcony across the street overlooking the court.
