SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County Animal Care team hosted a free drive-thru rabies vaccine clinic on Saturday in response to recent positive rabies cases in the area.

In collaboration with the Bulverde Animal Humane Society, the clinic was held at the Bexar-Bulverde Fire Department for 100 pets in total with a limit of two pets per household.

The clinic serves to support pet owners and keep the community safe by ensuring pets receive the annual rabies vaccination as required by law. Officials say getting the rabies vaccine is the best way to prevent the spread of rabies.

Jennifer Luna with Bexar County says this is the second vaccine clinic they have set up in the area since July due to an uptick in cases. She says they are planning another one in the future but in the mean time, pet owners can contact the county’s animal facility to coordinate getting a vaccination.

“We just want to make sure that every pet owner around this area is protected,” Luna said.

So far, Bexar County has seen 16 rabies cases this year, with two confirmed cases in wild foxes, which Luna says is unusual as they are normally seen in bats.

The Bexar County Animal Care Team recommends vaccinating all pets by 4 months of age, per Texas State Law.

If pet owners think their pet has been exposed to rabies, seek immediate veterinary care. For more information on Bexar County Animal Care and resources, click here.
