San Antonio’s “dopest lawyer” – a defense lawyer that’s built a brand around defending folks hit with drug charges – found himself on the opposite side of the law again over the weekend. Police say he drunkenly drove his car around his girlfriend’s neighborhood with some undisclosed amount of a controlled substance on him.

Daniel Mehler, self-described as the “dopest lawyer in town,” was booked into the Bexar County Jail on Saturday, October 4. He was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and a felony drug possession charge. Apparently, he was carrying less than 20 units of a schedule 1-A drug.

According to the Drug Enforcement Agency website, this schedule of drugs could include LSD, cannabis, ecstasy and heroin, among others. It’s a class reserved for drugs that have no “currently accepted medical use” and a high abuse potential.

The practicing attorney was reported to police, according to a warrant obtained by MySA, because his girlfriend wouldn’t talk to him.

“We contacted a witness who informed us that the suspect was driving his vehicle around the neighborhood and had been throwing things at the house,” a warrant for Mehler’s blood, inked by officer D. Zimmerman, states. “When we arrived at the location, [Mehler] was standing outside. He claimed that his girlfriend was refusing to see him.”

The officer says Mehler refused to participate in a field sobriety test but described him as emitting a strong odor of alcohol and speaking with slurred and confused speech. Though the attorney was reportedly cooperative and indifferent during the encounter with officers.

Mehler claimed he had a speech impediment, which could account for his slurred speech, though officers say the combination of a “very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath,” his inability to remain steady on his feet and glassy and blood-shot eyes were enough to arrest him and ask a judge to draw his blood.

Mehler was first stopped by officers at 11:54 p.m. Friday, October 3. But it’d be 12:51 p.m. the next day before he was booked into county jail after his blood was taken at 2:07 a.m. Saturday morning. The lawyer made bail and was released from his cell by 3:45 a.m. the following Sunday.

This isn’t Mehler’s first run-in with the law. He was arrested and charged with sexual assault, family violence and violating a protective order in July of last year. However, all the charges were dismissed, citing insufficient evidence, by March of 2025.
