NEW YORK — Hours before the Toronto Blue Jays were set to take on the New York Yankees in Game 4 of the American League Division Series, their star shortstop flashed signs of small progress in his recovery from a left knee injury.
Bo Bichette, who initially didn’t travel with the team to New York, jogged on the Yankee Stadium outfield grass ahead of Game 4 of the ALDS. It was the first time Bichette has been seen running since suffering a left knee sprain on Sept. 6 against the Yankees. On Monday, manager John Schneider said there was no significant update on the shortstop’s progress, though Wednesday’s appearance signals a change.
“He’s trying to ramp up,” Schneider said Monday. “Doing everything he can do to kind of get himself ready.”
Bichette lightly jogged to centre field multiple times, slowly walking back to the foul line as Blue Jays trainers watched on. While Bichette shed the knee brace he’s worn often in recent weeks, he still sported a limp while walking back to the visitors dugout. It’s progress, though, however small.
Bichette hasn’t played a game in over a month. But, when healthy, he’s a game-changing element in Toronto’s lineup. He hit .311 this season, breaking .300 for the fourth time in his career. He still led the Jays in RBIs, despite playing just 139 games. It remains entirely unknown if Bichette will be able to return to the Jays if they advance to the American League Championship Series, but beginning a running progression is the first sign of visible progress he’s shown in weeks. If Bichette is to re-join the Jays, even as a designated hitter, he will need to continue this progress ahead of Sunday, when the next series is set to begin.
For now, the Jays — with a two-games-to-one lead in the series — have two attempts left to close out the Yankees. If they can’t win the Division Series without Bichette, he’s progress will remain meaningless.
