Local state rep calls for Duval school board member to resign over controversial social media comment

  • October 11, 2025

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A state representative is demanding the resignation of a Duval County School Board member after a controversial comment on a social media post that targeted people with liberal politics, who were accused of spreading hate.

The post, shared by a page called “LibsofDuval,” featured a Duval County parent speaking during public comment at this week’s school board meeting. The page also called out other Jacksonville leaders with liberal views.

News4JAX was sent a screenshot showing April Carney, Vice Chair of the Duval County School Board, commenting under the post. Carney tagged a conservative page called “LibsofTikTok.”

The comment has since been deleted.

The “LibsofDuval” page later posted a video of parent advocate Yasmina White’s public comment from the meeting. White compared board members wearing pink shirts that read “This Is the Turning Point” to wearing white hoods.

State Representative Angie Nixon is now calling on Carney to step down. Nixon says she has received calls from parents and teachers who have been threatened because of the situation.

She spoke with News4JAX over Zoom.

“April Carney is in a leadership position, and she needs to get thick skin,” Nixon said. “I have been called out by name. I have been talked down to but, you know, I am not going to target a constituent. If someone harasses me to the point where they are threatening me with violence, then I’ll alert the sergeant of arms, or FDLE, or the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. But you cannot weaponize your office simply because you’re upset that you got called out.”

News4JAX reached out to Carney for comment, who denied any affiliation with the account and said the claims have no basis.

In a statement posted on X, Carney said she doesn’t care what Nixon thinks. She added, “While I called for unity at our hostile board meetings to heal, Angie fuels false narratives with her divisive rhetoric to harm.”

Carney also called Nixon a bully who slanders anyone who disagrees with her.

I frankly don’t give a damn what @AngieNixon thinks.

Parental advocate Yasmina White provided a statement to News4JAX on the matter, saying:

I am deeply disturbed by School Board Member April Carney’s actions. I had entrusted her to work professionally and in good faith for the benefit of all children in our school district. Instead, she chose to engage a social media account notorious for targeting and endangering private citizens by tagging it in a post that singled out parents like me.

As a parent advocate, my work has always centered on strengthening family engagement and holding elected officials accountable to their commitment to build a school system that serves every child and every need. April Carney’s actions betray that commitment and place a target on my back, and on my children, putting our safety and livelihood in harm’s way.

This is not about political disagreement; for me it is about accountability, and the basic expectation that elected officials must protect the families they serve, not endanger them.
