Today’s Big Stories
1. Texas to play major role in legal battle of federalizing state troops
National Guard troops from Illinois and Texas were seen at a U.S. Army Reserve Center in Elwood. All 500 of them had been activated for 60 days, but a judge on Thursday blocked the deployment of the troops in the Chicago area for at least two weeks. The judge could decide to extend the order again at an Oct. 22 hearing.
2. Austin City Council approves $4.3 million homeless navigation center
Austin City Council has approved a measure to open a homeless navigation center in southeast Austin.
The city-owned property aims to be a place where unhoused people can access stable housing and other services. It will be located at I-35 and Oltorf Street and will cost the city around $4.3 million, KVUE reports.
3. She saw a car-sized object above a Texas farm and found a wayward hunk of NASA equipment
When Ann Walter looked outside her rural West Texas home, she didn’t know what to make of the bulky object slowly drifting across the sky.
She was even more surprised to see what actually landed in her neighbor’s wheat field: a boxy piece of scientific equipment about the size of a sport-utility vehicle, attached to a massive parachute, adorned with NASA stickers. She called the local sheriff’s office and learned that NASA, indeed, was looking for a piece of equipment that had gone lost.
