PHOENIX — Three people were hurt in an alleged attempted robbery turned shooting near Tempe Town Lake late Friday night, authorities said.

According to the Tempe Police Department, officers and detectives responded to the area of Rio Salado Parkway and Hardy Drive for a shooting investigation around 11:42 p.m.

Police said that two people were riding scooters on the south side of Tempe Town Lake when a group of multiple people approached them.

The group reportedly attempted to rob one of the scooter riders at gunpoint.

According to Tempe PD, that is when the scooter riders and one of the suspects exchanged gunfire.

The suspects left before police arrived but were later located by officers, police said.

One of the scooter riders and two of the suspects were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Tempe police.

There is no outstanding threat to the community.

Tempe PD did not name the suspects due to the ongoing investigation.
