November has been filled with service and Social Studies projects at Christ Church Day School (CCDS). Our students partnered with Christ Church to fill 160 bags of thanksgiving food for San Diego’s neediest as well as filling 66 shoe boxes as part of the Operation Christmas Child program. This outreach enables needy children from around the globe to receive a shoebox filled with toys and personal items for Christmas.
Service projects aren’t the only thing that has been in the spotlight as several grade levels have held some special Social Studies projects as well. Our second grade studied about San Diegans of long ago and visited Old Town and even made corn husk dolls like the children did long ago. Our fourth grade created their version of the “Amazing Race” using the regions of California as the backdrop to finding hidden geographical gems and tested their parents skills to identify the locations. Our sixth grade turned the beach into an archaeological dig site as they buried artifacts from civilizations that they created. Teams set out to excavate the artifacts and are in the process of classifying their finds and comparing their efforts to that of ancient civilizations.
