Fire crews are responding to the scene after a small airplane crashed near Hicks Airfield Sunday afternoon, sending a huge plume of thick black smoke into the air.

According to police log calls, several crews were dispatched to the 12700 block of North Saginaw Boulevard following the crash.

Several first responders from different agencies responded to the scene.

Firefighters and Tarrant County deputies surrounded the industrial property where the plane went down, carrying hoses up and down a driveway to the back of the business where firefighters responded to the crash scene.

The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office said it had workers at the scene, but they were responding in a supporting role and not the lead agent.

The sheriff’s office told KXAS-TV that traffic is closed at Tinsley Road and 287, as well as Cattlebend at 287.

The Federal Aviation Administration was notified about the incident and would be the lead investigative agency, according to the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office. The FAA, citing the ongoing federal government shutdown, said in an automated response to The News that it would not be responding to routine media inquiries because of the government shutdown.

It was not immediately clear if anyone was hurt, but there were reports that the aircraft crashed into big rigs in the area.

Video from social media showed a thick black plume of smoke coming from the area.
