JSO remembers veteran corrections officer killed a year ago at Northside truck stop

  • October 12, 2025

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sunday marks one year since the day a veteran corrections officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office lost his life after stepping into a domestic dispute at a truck stop on Jacksonville’s northside.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office remembered Officer Brad McNew on Sunday for his “kindness, faith and dedication” to the community he served for 24 years.

McNew was shot and killed on Oct.12, 2024. He intervened in a violent dispute between Demaurea Grant and Makayla Huggins at a Love’s travel station on Duval Road.

Moments after Grant and the Huggins returned to their car, JSO said Grant shot McNew, then drove off, sparking a nationwide manhunt.

He was caught in North Carolina days later and extradited to the Clay County jail in May. He faces first-degree murder and other charges.

McNew’s loved ones, colleagues and friends had nothing but good things and memories to share about him.

He was remembered as someone who was selfless, loving and devoted.

He is survived by his wife, Elda McNew, and their son, Liam McNew, who shared nothing but great memories of McNew.

Grant’s pretrial will be held on Monday.
