JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) — A house explosion in Jacksonville on Friday afternoon left two residents hospitalized, with one in stable condition and the other in rough shape but expected to survive. The explosion occurred at 2130 E. Morton Ave., and emergency crews responded around 4:50 p.m. A nearby business reported feeling the tremors and called for help immediately.

Shirley Henson, who was working next door at 2126 E. Morton Ave., described the scene: “We just heard a loud, loud, loud explosion and we all jumped up out of our seats and headed for the door and all we saw was debris flying over here from the house and we got outside and we were just… somebody call 911, somebody call 911.”

Volunteers have been on-site since Saturday morning, assisting with pet rescues, cleanup, and salvaging memories. Henson expressed concerns about looting, saying, “The family is out here trying to get possessions. We believe there were looters out here last night who were stealing stuff from them. If anybody could, they’re asking for boxes, totes, maybe bring some lunch over here, drinks. That’d be much appreciated.”

Both victims work with the Presbyterian Daycare, which had multiple members show up to help. Family friends also joined the effort, rescuing two cats. Two of the three dogs survived the blast and are being treated at a vet, along with two of the three cats.

The Illinois Commerce Commission and the Illinois State Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the explosion, which has not yet been announced. The Jacksonville Police Department has set up a video surveillance system to deter potential looters. Volunteers are asking for any form of support, including boxes, prayer, or moral support.
