A young teen is fighting for his life in the hospital after he was shot in the face while hanging out with friends in the backyard of a home on Monday evening, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

The shooting happened just after 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 13 on the 3100 block of Gaul Street in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 16-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to his face, Inspector Small explained.

The boy was bleeding heavily and police took him to a nearby hospital where he was listed in critical condition, according to Small.

Inspector Small also told NBC10 that investigators have learned that the teen was hanging out in the backyard of the home on Gaul Street with some friends when the shot was fired.

Police discovered that the alleged suspect is known to the victim, Small said.

Witnesses at the scene were able to identify a 15-year-old as the suspect so police were able to quickly track him down and taken him into custody, according to Small.

The 15-year-old, along with witnesses, have been taken to police headquarters for questioning, Small said.

The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating.
