A police chase ended with a crash and one person in custody in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia on Tuesday.
Just before noon, witnesses reported seeing several police vehicles chasing a black pickup truck down Spring Garden Street before it crashed into the back of the vehicle near North Orianna Street.
“You could see the truck come flying without a wheel, and he almost hit a cop standing on the corner,” said Mecca Peterson, who witnessed the chase. “People were concerned, people started running.”
Radio dispatches from New Jersey State Police reveal the truck may have hit a police vehicle near Admiral Wilson Boulevard before taking off. Radio calls indicate the driver, with a flat tire, led police into Pennsylvania, where state police were waiting.
As the truck turned onto Spring Garden Street in Philadelphia, witnesses say a police vehicle hit the rear of the truck, causing it to spin out and end the chase.
Witnesses also report seeing the driver holding a gun before he was taken into custody.
“It could have been real bad. There are lots of shops and older people walking around, walking their dogs right on that strip,” said Peterson.
Police have not released any further details on the incident.
