Holger Rune is out of the 2025 Queen’s Club Championships after suffering an upset defeat to Roberto Bautista Agut.

The 22-year-old didn’t break his opponent’s serve once during the match, and despite managing to clinch the second set in a tiebreaker, he was ultimately overcome by the Spaniard.

Bautista Agut earned his best win of the year over Rune, defeating the Dane 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 to set up a semi-final clash with Carlos Alcaraz.

It was the 22nd top 10 win of his career, and first since October last year, when he beat Casper Ruud in Basel.

Rune, who will now look ahead to his fifth appearance at Wimbledon, acknowledged Bautista Agut’s efforts at Queen’s after the match.

Following his defeat to the 37-year-old, Rune took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to send a message to his conqueror.

The world number nine said: “Respect to Agut for an incredible match today.

“And for me, time to continue my work on the practice court to get ready for Wimbledon.”

Rune is yet to match his best finish at Queen’s from two years ago, when he made the semi-finals at the tournament in 2023, before bowing out to Alex de Minaur.

Holger Rune’s 2024 Wimbledon campaign

After reaching the quarter-final at the All England Club in 2023, Rune’s 2024 Wimbledon campaign ended in the fourth round.

He earned a comfortable first-round victory over Kwon Soon-woo and defeated Thiago Seyboth Wild in his next match.

Following a victory over Quentin Halys in a five-set marathon in the third round, Rune’s next opponent came in the form of seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic.

It was the first meeting on grass between the two ATP stars, and Djokovic cruised to victory in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals.

Rune’s last eight appearance at Wimbledon in 2023 was his joint-best Grand Slam finish, having also made the quarter-finals of the French Open twice.
