Jacksonville candlelight vigil honors 78 victims of domestic violence

  • October 17, 2025

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – A candlelight vigil was held on Thursday to honor 78 people across the state who had their lives cut short due to domestic violence in the past year alone.

The event was held by the Onslow Victims Center at the Jacksonville Riverwalk Park.

The names of victims were read, as well as their cause of death, a majority due to gun violence.

“It made me think a lot about how it could’ve been me, my mom and my brother,” domestic violence survivor and guest speaker Lashae Cavers shared.

“It was very humbling and sad at the same time to hear those names. But I am happy that they are remembered, that those names are shared with the community, because it’s very important to also know that they are not forgotten.”

Cavers says she continues to share her story as a way to support others and let them know that they are not alone.

“I find that sharing my story is also healing for me as well and to be able to let folks know that hey your past does not define your future, there is hope through the resources like the Onslow Victims Center,” she said.

The Onslow Victims Center has been providing support and resources for families and individuals experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking for 42 years.

Meg Dennis, the center’s Executive Director encourages those in need to reach out for support.

“We do have a 24/7 crisis hotline and we have an emergency shelter that has 27 beds for those fleeing imminent danger,” she said. “We have hospital response so if a victim comes into the emergency department we can get dispatched and go spend time with them.”

Dennis says the center also provides court advocacy, community case management and support groups every month for those dealing with a crisis.

“I would say give us a call and we’ll meet you where you’re at, we’ll find out what’s going on and then offer options, information, resources and we’ll walk alongside you. You’re not alone.”

For the 24-hour Crisis hotline, individuals can call 910.347.4000.
