Longtime MLB agent Jeff Randazzo has launched a new agency, weeks after his sudden departure from Ballengee Sports Group, The Athletic has learned.
Randazzo, 44, is now the president and co-founder of Covenant Sports Group, which will operate out of Philadelphia and Jupiter, Fla. Among the notable clients joining Randazzo at Covenant include Mason Miller and Gavin Sheets of the San Diego Padres, Tommy Kahnle of the Detroit Tigers and Brenton Doyle of the Colorado Rockies. Covenant Sports Group currently represents 22 major-leaguers and 13 minor-leaguers, including St. Louis Cardinals top prospect JJ Wetherholt.
Joining Randazzo at Covenant are agents Jeff Borris, Chris Lemonis and Nick Tiano, who also serves as a co-founder. Covenant’s mission is “to challenge the status quo in player representation,” Randazzo said.
“The goal is to double down on what I’ve already been doing with these guys,” Randazzo said. “Now that I’m at the forefront of the group, this allows me to control our destinies.”
Both Randazzo and Borris were fired from Ballengee in late August. Randazzo joined Ballengee in 2014 from MVP Sports Group, when the former agency had first launched. Borris, whose most notable client was Barry Bonds, joined Ballengee in 2015.
When asked what led to his termination, Randazzo declined to elaborate on specifics.
“We had a good run,” Randazzo said. “I wish them the best of luck.”
Randazzo did not lose a single client in the transition, and at least 17 of his clients elected to go on MLB’s Do Not Contact list when he was fired. The Do Not Contact list prohibits players from being contacted by certified agents from other agencies.
“It’s a humbling feeling and it speaks to the character of the players and the understanding of our trust and confidence in each other over the years,” Randazzo said. “I love what I do, I have always prided myself in putting the players first, and I think their decision shows a reflection of that.”
Other notable major-leaguers now represented by Covenant include Zack Agnos (Rockies), Graham Pauley (Miami Marlins), Tim Mayza (Philadelphia Phillies), Nick Mears (Milwaukee Brewers), Gordon Graceffo (Cardinals) and Richie Palacios (Tampa Bay Rays).
