History

TOWSON – The Elon University volleyball team fell to CAA-leader Towson on Friday, as the Tigers earned a straight-set win (18-25, 15-25, 19-25) at SECU Arena.
 
Elon (4-14, 2-5 CAA) was led by graduate student Simrin Carlsen, who posted 10 kills and 11 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. Clara Simmons added nine kills, while Kayla Palmer paced the offense with 19 assists.
 
Towson (18-2, 9-0 CAA) extended its winning streak to 18 matches and remained unbeaten in conference play. Ella Sanders led the Tigers with 15 kills and added 11 digs for a double-double. Maisie Jesse recorded 20 assists, as Towson outhit Elon .385 to .219.
 
THE RUNDOWN

  • Elon battled early in the opening set after falling behind 6-2. The Phoenix responded with a 5-0 run to take a brief lead and stayed close throughout, tying the score at 14-all on a Caroline Berlekamp kill. Towson answered with a 5-0 spurt to regain control before Elon cut the deficit to four at 22-18 on a Catherine Rucker kill. The Tigers closed the frame with a 3-0 run to take the first set, 25-18.
  • Elon started the second set with a 3-2 lead before Towson surged ahead with an 8-1 run to make it 10-4. The Tigers maintained control, building a 20-12 advantage before closing the set 25-15 to go up 2-0 in the match.
  • The Phoenix opened the third set with a 2-0 edge, but Towson countered with three straight points to move ahead. Elon remained within striking distance, pulling to within three at 11-8 on another Rucker kill. The Tigers then went on a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 19-13. The Phoenix trimmed the deficit to four at 20-16 following a 3-1 spurt, but Towson held steady, finishing the set 25-19 for the sweep.

 
NOTES AND STATS

  • Casey Brower tallied a team-high 13 digs, joining Carlsen in double figures. It marked Brower’s third double-digit dig performance of the season.
  • Towson improved to 22-3 all-time against Elon and has now won six straight in the series.
