PERHAM, Maine (WGME) — Maine authorities are offering a $3,000 reward for information about whoever illegally shot and killed a Canada lynx in Perham.

The Maine Warden Service found a dead Canada lynx along Mouse Island Road in Perham in Aroostook County on Wednesday.

Wardens say the lynx did not die of natural causes. The animal was shot and killed approximately 24 hours before it was found.

The Canada lynx is a federally protected species. It is a federal offense to harass, trap, hunt, or kill a lynx in the United States.

“The shooting of this animal was unnecessary, conducted without regard for its protected status, and left to waste,” the Maine Warden Service said.

Operation Game Thief is offering a $3,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
