BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – OCEARCH has announced the long-awaited resurfacing of Serena, an 11-foot, 700-pound adult female white shark that was tagged off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida, in May.

After several months without transmitting her location, Serena finally surfaced long enough for her tracking device to send a signal.

According to OCEARCH Chief Scientist Dr. Harley Newton, most shark movement occurs below the ocean’s surface, making it difficult for satellite tags to transmit consistently.

This, he noted, is why researchers rely on multiple types of tags to understand better the complex migration patterns of these large marine predators.

With only two recorded pings months apart, Serena’s whereabouts during her time out of contact remain a mystery. Her unexpected reappearance has sparked renewed interest in her movements and behavior deep beneath the waves.

Researchers and the public can continue to follow her journey using the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker App or visiting ocearch.org.
