The Harris County GOP is already hard at work ahead of the midterm elections, and with Governor Abbott recently pledging to spend big supporting Harris County Republican candidates, spirits among local Republicans are high.
He announced that he would be spending a significant portion of his $90 million campaign war chest here in Harris County. This could make 2026 the perfect opportunity for Harris County Republicans to make a massive comeback.
That’s the opinion of Jared Woodfill with Conservative Republicans of Texas, a former Harris County GOP Chairman. He said, “If you look at what’s happening at the macro level with the President and what’s happening with the United States Congress, I think that all bodes well for the Republican Party.”
He’s expecting that, contrary to the normal pattern of the party in power losing ground in the midterms, the Republicans will have a massive turnout in the 2026 midterms, and with Governor Abbott’s support, the Harris County GOP will be able to share in that big time.
Woodfill praised the Harris County GOP for their early efforts, especially when it comes to candidate recruitment, saying, “Everything is looking great; we just need to keep on track and keep moving forward. We need to make sure that we sprint through the finish line.”
So does that mean the GOP is unbeatable this cycle? No, it doesn’t. Woodfill warned of the two things that could kneecap local Republicans, saying, “If we are not successful here, the first thing you’re going to want to look at is, what did the Harris County Republican Party’s voter registration and get-out-the-vote efforts look like? What was the energy level, the enthusiasm level, with respect to our base?”
The good news is, Woodfill thinks Governor Abbott’s contributions will go a long way toward the local GOP’s registration and turnout efforts.
