The stories we retell about the dog or cat or bird or rabbit that shared our home, and our lives, over several sweet years are plentiful and poignant.
We’ll share anecdotes about their favorite toys, obsessed-over treats, and how our snuggly sweetheart stuck to us as we did the laundry, watched TV, and, of course, cooked dinner (sometimes tasty tidbits would “accidentally” fall to the floor for an attending pup to quickly gobble up).
Where, though, can you and the memories you hold play a moving role in a larger tribute, one that honors hundreds of Southern Californian pets and the people who dearly loved them, and love them still?
The Beloved Pet Ofrenda at the Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens is the sweet spot, a physical space of remembrance, community, and all sorts of adorable snapshots and illustrations.
Visit on a weekend day through Nov. 2, and be sure to bring a copy of a photo that you don’t mind place on the ofrenda and leaving behind.
Plaza de la Raza Cultural Center for the Arts & Education partnered with the animal park on the Día de los Muertos display, a sizable area that features paper marigolds, papel picado, and other creative details that add a bittersweet beauty.
The Beloved Pets Ofrenda reminds us of our connections to our animals and to each other, too; so many of us tend to furry, feather, and fishy companions several times daily, with love, and a community place to express that love has a way of strengthening ties.
