You know I’m always on the lookout for cute houses like this Junius Heights Craftsman that also have income potential. That’s because achieving home ownership is no easy task these days. Having a garage apartment, back house, or even a spare bedroom with a private entrance can make the difference between owning and renting. It can also take your search to another level, knowing you can have income offsetting your mortgage.

Fortunately, many homes in our historic neighborhoods were intentionally designed to serve their owners. In the 1920s, a large number of our Craftsman and Tudor homes were built with two front doors. One opened into the living area, and the other directly into a front bedroom. This layout was popular because boarders were common. Renting out your front bedroom to a traveling salesman or a worker for a week or two was the norm.
I remember asking a 94-year-old neighbor about what that was like. She said it really helped her parents out. Fast forward, and not much has changed. Homeowners still need a bit of help, and that front bedroom, back house, or garage apartment is a huge bonus. This 1922 Junius Heights Craftsman offers that income potential with an adorable garage apartment.

The house has been beautifully restored, retaining its character while incorporating thoughtful updates, such as an open-concept kitchen featuring quartz countertops, custom cabinetry, and stainless steel appliances. At 2,611 square feet, it features four bedrooms and three bathrooms, making it an absolutely perfect family home.

The original garage was converted into a flex space, and as I mentioned, the icing on the cake here is the separate living space. It’s a complete one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment with a full kitchen and private entrance.

Owners Michael Prysock and Carrie Rogers, along with their sons, have loved living in this neighborhood. They were actually friends with the previous owners, who called them when they were about to put the house up for sale.
“It was on the market for about 30 minutes,” Carrie said. “Five offers went in immediately, and fortunately, they picked ours. We have loved the neighborhood, and we have the best neighbors. It was nice to have the extra income from the back house. We had a graduate from SMU for a while, and I am still in touch with him and his mom!”
The backyard area is an ideal entertainment space, with a pool, turf lawn, and fire pit area.
Open House: Sunday, November 2, 1-3 p.m.
