NLTA Voicing Support for Alberta Teachers Mandated Back to Work

NLTA President Dale Lambe (VOCM News)

Teachers in this province are eyeing the situation in Alberta where their colleagues, who were on strike, were legislated back by government.

The NLTA says the issues waged by teachers there closely resemble what they’re up against in Newfoundland and Labrador – growing class sizes, increasing needs of students, violence in the classroom, and insufficient resources to address the shortcomings.

Association President Dale Lambe says they will be entering their own round of bargaining in a few months, and they urge the new government not to employ the same tactic as used in Alberta. Lambe says back-to-work legislation silences the voices of workers instead of addressing the issues that brought them to the table in the first place.

Meanwhile, the NLTA is urging the public to wear red in support of Alberta’s teachers and post that support online.
