Officers witnessed a collision at the intersection of Cathcart Street and Huron Street where one vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign and struck another vehicle
Sault police officers charged a 20-year-old Sudbury man on Thursday night after a collision sent two people to hospital.
One of the individuals taken to hospital by paramedics had life threatening injuries.
At around 9:40 p.m., officers witnessed the collision at the intersection of Cathcart Street and Huron Street — where one vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign and struck another vehicle, a news release said.
“After the collision, the occupants of the vehicle which had failed to stop exited the vehicle and ran away. Officers located all occupants of the vehicle and identified the driver as the accused,” the release said.
Upon speaking with the driver, officers believed his ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by drugs.
Officers read the accused a demand for an evaluation by a Drug Recognition Expert, but the accused refused to comply.
“Further investigation revealed the vehicle they were driving had been stolen and the accused is a prohibited and suspended driver,” the release said.
Denis Leduc is charged with:
- Operation While Impaired Causing Bodily Harm
- Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm
- Refusal to Comply with Demand
- Operation While Prohibited x5
- Theft of Motor Vehicle
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime – Over $5,000
- Failure to Comply with Probation Order x2
- Fail to Remain (under the Highway Traffic Act)
- Driving While Under Suspension (under the Highway Traffic Act)
The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
None of the allegations have been tested in court and Leduc is considered innocent until proven guilty.
