Bankrupt Jackson Hospital names new board members, CEO

  • November 4, 2025

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Ailing Jackson Hospital is shaking up its leadership team, announcing Monday the appointments of several trustees to its board and naming a new chief executive officer to helm the hospital in efforts to restore its financial health.

John Quinlivan was tapped as CEO to lead the hospital through its ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy and reorganization proceedings.

New board members include Chairman Charles Evans, Jeff Crudele, and Gary M. Murphey, which Jackson said will bring “vital healthcare and financial competencies” that will help guide the hospital “through restructuring, a feasible bankruptcy recovery plan, essential infrastructure repairs, payer contract improvements and operational resets” it says is critical to keeping the hospital operating.

CHARLES EVANS

Jackson called Evans “an internationally recognized leader in hospital management” who oversaw more than 120 hospitals while previously serving as the president of HCA Healthcare’s Eastern Group.

JEFF CRUDELE

Jackson said Crudele’s 30-year career “is recognized as one of the most accomplished senior financial executives in the healthcare industry,” and pointed to the significant turnaround under of the Allegheny Health Network while he was its chief financial officer.

GARY MURPHEY

Jackson said Murphey brings more than 35 years of experience in financial examinations, forensic accounting and managing financially distressed companies, and has served in roles that include CEO, CFO and chief restructuring officer.

The board’s first decision after taking on a leadership role was to name Quinlivan as CEO, a hire that became effective Monday.

“Quinlivan brings decades of hospital management experience and a strong history of improving performance and financial stability,” the hospital said.

“Jackson Hospital has been through tremendous challenges, but I’ve seen what’s possible when you combine caring, engaged leadership with dedicated staff to make the changes needed for the health and vitality of critical community facilities like this,” Quinlivan said.

“The foundation is here,” the new CEO added. “Now we need to bring together the right plan, the right partnerships and relentless execution to ensure Jackson Hospital can continue serving Montgomery and the Alabama River Region.”

BANKRUPTCY ONGOING

Jackson filed for bankruptcy this year after defaulting on $60 million in bond payments in 2024. It has worked to stave off possible closure and, in mid-October a federal judge approved additional funding to help keep Jackson Hospital’s doors open – for now.
