Gunfire erupted Wednesday after former Lakers player Christian Wood fired several rounds during an attempted home invasion in Sherman Oaks, LAPD tells NBC4 Investigates.
Police said people were inside the one when a group of people tried to break into the house on Otsego Street by smashing the back door at around 1 p.m..
Wood, who was inside the two-story house, confronted the would-be burglars before running outside and firing 3 to 4 rounds at the ground, police said. The suspects were scared off and fled in a vehicle in an unknown direction.
No one was injured.
Police said no one was arrested, and nothing was taken from the home. Neighbors tell NBCLA that the home is used as an Airbnb rental.
The attempted break-in during the daytime rattled neighbors, with some telling NBCLA that they feel “very apprehensive.” One of them said, prior to Wednesday’s incident, he didn’t always lock his home doors always in the seemingly safe, residential neighborhood, but the attempted burglary taught him to be vigilant.
Wood, who is a Long Beach native, was waived by the Los Angeles Lakers following the 2023-2024 season after dealing with injury. He is currently an active player and a free agent in the NBA.
