PHOENIX (AZFamily) — As many Americans seek help amid the government shutdown, Phoenix is feeding its citizens through a citywide food drive.
City officials announced that a food drive will be launched to help families affected by the temporary suspension of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The city is partnering with St. Mary’s Food Bank to make sure residents have access to meals.
“When crisis strikes, Phoenix comes together to help,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said in a statement. “During this unprecedented emergency, I urge everyone who can help to step up. Donate food, send money, give your time to help your neighbors who have temporarily lost their lifeline.”
Foods most needed include proteins like canned meats and beans, peanut butter and canned fruits and vegetables.
Food donations can be dropped off at these Phoenix facilities during business hours:
Burton Barr Central Library
- Location: 1221 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix
- Hours: Monday – Saturday 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Sunday 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Cesar Chavez Community Center
- Location: 7858 S. 35th Avenue, Laveen Village
- Hours: Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Friday – Saturday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Goelet A.C. Beuf Community Center
- Location: 3435 W. Pinnacle Peak Road, Phoenix
- Hours: Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Paradise Valley Community Center
- Location: 17402 N. 40th Street, Phoenix
- Hours: Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Pecos Community Center
- Location: 17010 S. 48th Street, Phoenix
- Hours: Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Sunnyslope Community Center
- Location: 802 E. Vogel Avenue, Phoenix
- Hours: Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Last month, Gov. Katie Hobbs announced new food bank funding and an emergency program amid the SNAP pause. Gov. Hobbs directed $1.8 million in unspent COVID-19 relief funds to provide emergency food assistance for Arizona families. In the High Country, food pantries have been set up to help furloughed national park staff.
