First responders rescued a pursuit suspect Thursday night after falling into a shaft at a construction site in Lincoln Heights.

The man, who was wanted for a stolen vehicle pursuit, was attempting to evade officers on foot when he fell into an approximately 30-foot-deep, 4-foot-wide vertical shaft at a construction site, police said.

The man was immediately trapped inside, and a rescue mission ensued.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the incident around 9:33 p.m. along North Sichel Street near the 5 Freeway. An LAFD aerial ladder was requested to serve as a high anchor for a rope rescue.

“LAFD USAR teams lowered wristlets into the shaft and were able to direct the patient to place them on his wrists. Patient was then lifted and fully extricated from the shaft by rope,” wrote the LAFD.

The 27-year-old man was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, LAFD said.

NewsChopper4 was over the construction site that had temporary shoring walls and several holes.
