PHOENIX — Valley motorists should expect to be affected by multiple freeway closures when driving around metro Phoenix this weekend.

In its Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for Nov. 7-Nov. 10, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) said that parts of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway and the Loop 202 South Mountain and Santan freeways will close Friday and Saturday nights.

The department noted that closures are subject to change due to weather or other factors.

Weekend closures planned for Loop 101 in Scottsdale

ADOT said that southbound Loop 101 will close over the weekend for a widening project.

The freeway will close between Hayden Road and Shea Boulevard from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

The Scottsdale Road on-ramp for eastbound Loop 101 will also be closed, according to the traffic authority.

ADOT told drivers to expect heavy traffic and delays due to the closure. It also recommended using southbound State Route 51 to access eastbound Shea Boulevard or exiting to southbound Scottsdale Road to get to eastbound Shea Boulevard.

On Monday, the $108 million widening project reached a major milestone, as a new northbound lane opened between Shea Boulevard and Princess Drive.

A new southbound lane is expected to open after this weekend’s closure.

Weekend closures planned for Loop 202 in southeast Valley

In the southeast Valley, there will be two different closures affecting parts of the Loop 202 South Mountain and Santan freeways.

According to ADOT, both directions of Loop 202 will be closed between Kyrene Road and 40th Street in the Chandler and Ahwatukee areas for pavement sealing. However, the closures are planned for different nights.

Westbound Loop 202 will close from 9 p.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Saturday. Meanwhile, the eastbound Loop 202 closure will start at 9 p.m. on Saturday and is planned to reopen at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

During the closures, the eastbound and westbound Loop 202 ramps to and from Interstate 10 near Chandler Boulevard will be closed. ADOT recommended drivers use Chandler Boulevard or Ray Road as an alternate route.

In addition to those pavement sealing closures, the eastbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway will shut down between Williams Field and Higley roads for pavement maintenance.

The freeway will close from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday and shut down the Gilbert Road, Lindsay Road and Val Vista Drive on-ramps.

To access eastbound Loop 202, the traffic authority advised motorists to consider using eastbound Williams Field or Germann roads to Higley Road.

Other projects that could cause traffic over the weekend

ADOT also warned drivers about a freeway restriction in Chandler and a frontage road closure in Phoenix that will be in place over the weekend.

From 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, the eastbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway will be narrowed down to two lanes between Alma School Road and Arizona Avenue for bridge work.

In addition, Arizona Avenue will be closed in both directions from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday for the work.

The traffic authority recommended that drivers take Pecos or Germann roads to Alma School or McQueen roads in order to navigate around the closure.

A frontage road for southbound Interstate 17 will also be closed between Camelback and Indian School roads for pavement maintenance.

The road closure will take place from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday and shut down the off- and on-ramps at Camelback Road, but only the off-ramp at Indian School Road.

ADOT said that southbound 27th Avenue could be taken as an alternate route.
