Just before 5 p.m. Saturday, Nanaimo RCMP says the situation with an armed individual has been resolved.

Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP told CHEK “Situation resolved,” adding that the individual had been “apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to hospital.”

O’Brien says a search warrant is being prepared, allowing members to enter the home “and search for the possibility of a firearm.”

Earlier on Saturday, emergency crisis management teams were responding to an armed individual in a residential neighbourhood near Terminal Avenue.

A witness told CHEK that at around 11:20 a.m. Saturday, while riding the bus, she observed several black police vehicles near Terminal Avenue.

Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson told CHEK that RCMP Emergency Response Teams (ERT) and crisis management teams were on scene on a residential street near Departure Bay dealing with an armed individual.

Island Health crisis management spokesperson Tyler Hooper also confirmed the active police matter but had no further comments.

RCMP’s ERT members are highly trained and are brought in to support major cases that are cross-jurisdictional, to coordinate operations across municipal boundaries and to provide expert advice to fellow police on weapons.
