HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A 5-year-old girl was killed and a woman was injured on Friday evening in a crash caused by an alleged drunk driver in northeast Harris County, according to investigators.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened on East Mount Houston near Sheridan Road around 8 p.m.
Investigators said the child was in a gray Cadillac with a woman believed to be her mother.
Officials said the car was heading west on E. Mount Houston when a driver in a white Nissan SUV, heading east, veered into the oncoming traffic lane and hit the Cadillac head-on.
The fire department responded and provided aid to the crash victims before they were transported.
HCSO said the child died on the way to the hospital. Her mother was seriously injured but is expected to recover.
Officials identified the Nissan driver as a 20-year-old man who showed signs of being intoxicated.
Deputies said they found several open drink containers in the car after the crash. The 20-year-old driver was also hurt and taken to the hospital, but his condition is not known.
ABC13 learned that the Harris County District Attorney’s Office was at the scene looking through the evidence to determine possible charges against the 20-year-old.
“Unfortunately, this is the cause — in some of these incidents, intoxicated drivers are causing crashes that are hurting other people,” Captain Albers with HCSO said.
