The NDP is worried about the future of the emissions cap – now that Ottawa has signaled it might become a thing of the past.
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s federal budget appears to put the wheels in motion toward getting rid of the cap, but citing a devastating fire season, NDP Leader Jim Dinn says a plan is needed to help protect communities from future climate disasters.
Dinn is calling on Ottawa to implement a new climate plan to reduce carbon emissions.
“Whatever the plan is, if it’s going to be an emissions cap or if it’s going to be carbon pricing, for God’s sake, realize that we’re watching not just our province burn, but other parts of the country,” he told reporters.
“And this is a future that I don’t think we want; I certainly don’t want it for my grandchildren. But how do we make sure we reach those targets, but also transition to a greener economy?”
