There will be a lot of angst over the Green Bay Packers’ offense after Monday night. But don’t let it be forgotten that the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense was the best in the NFL last season, and most of those players still remain.
On a night when the Eagles’ offense did very little, the defense made sure it didn’t matter. Philadelphia had its best defensive effort of the season at Green Bay and got a 10-7 win. The Packers didn’t score for the first 54 minutes of the game. When they got the ball back just before the two-minute warning trailing by a field goal, the Eagles got the stop they needed to close out the win. Eagles end Jaelan Phillips, acquired at the trade deadline last week, stuffed Josh Jacobs on a key fourth down.

The Eagles had a curious decision to go for it on fourth down with less than a minute to go instead of punting, giving the Packers the ball at their 35-yard line with 27 seconds left. That strange choice gave the Packers a shot at a 64-yard field goal after a completion, but it was no good as time expired and Philadelphia survived.
Head coach Nick Sirianni said he doesn’t regret the decision, saying a field-goal attempt was too risky because of the windy conditions at Lambeau Field.
“I would have liked to be a little closer to kick a field goal,” Sirianni said.
It was the type of victory nobody will want to watch on an NFL Network replay in five years, but it was a big one for Philadelphia. The Eagles are 7-2 after the win and in good shape to chase the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs.

Neither team scored in the first half, and there were no touchdowns until the fourth quarter. Jalen Hurts threw one up to DeVonta Smith, who made a great contested catch in the end zone for a 36-yard score.
There weren’t many other offensive highlights for Philadelphia on Monday. The Eagles defense will gladly collect all the game balls.

For those tuning in to see if they could get fantasy points from a pair of star-filled offenses, the first half was quite a disappointment.
There hadn’t been a scoreless first half in the 2024 season. There wasn’t one this season until Monday night as the Packers and Eagles kept each other off the scoreboard. The 0-0 tie at halftime was the first time neither team scored before halftime of a Monday night game since Browns-Ravens in 2009, ESPN said. The defenses showed up, at least.

Neither offense was great, especially the two quarterbacks, but the defenses were a major part of that. Each defense forced a critical fumble. Near the end of a long drive, linebacker Edgerrin Cooper punched out the ball before Hurts was tackled and Green Bay recovered. Then with Green Bay in field-goal range late in the second quarter, Love fumbled on a sack by Nakobe Dean and Philadelphia recovered.
It was a great Monday night matchup between two contenders in the NFC. There just wasn’t much offensive excitement in the first half.
The scoreless tie is broken
There was finally a score in the third quarter. The Eagles drove inside Packers territory and got a field goal for a 3-0 lead. That’s how the third quarter ended, with no touchdowns and one field goal through 13 finished possessions by both teams.

The Packers hadn’t reached the red zone through three quarters but finally seemed to get there on a long catch by Christian Watson early in the fourth quarter. But it was brought back on an illegal formation penalty. That’s how the night was going for both offenses. The Packers ended up punting.
The Eagles finally got the elusive first touchdown of the night. Saquon Barkley turned a short Hurts pass into a 41-yard gain, and then DeVonta Smith jumped over Packers safety Evan Williams in the end zone for a 36-yard touchdown. Given how the Packers’ offense had been playing to that point, a 10-0 lead seemed insurmountable.
The Packers weren’t done. They put together a drive and Jacobs dragged defenders into the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown with 5:49 remaining.

The Packers had a shot to get off the field on third-and-12 after that touchdown, but Hurts made a nice pass to Smith for a first down. That was a massive play at that point in the game, keeping the ball from the Packers after their offense finally showed some signs of life.
The Eagles’ defense hasn’t been consistently elite like it was last season. It has been good, but not always great. On a night when Philadelphia needed the defense to be great, it came through for the win.

What a weird finish. Both teams tried to give the game away at the end.
The Packers succeeded as Brandon McManus badly missed what would have been a Lambeau Field record 64-yard field goal attempt as time expired.
The miss secured a 10-7 Eagles win that head coach Nick Sirianni put at risk with an unnecessary fourth-down deep pass late in the game.
The Eagles improve to 7-2, and the Packers drop to 5-3-1 after a weird one in Green Bay.

What was Nick Sirianni thinking? The Eagles drew up a deep pass play on fourth down at the Green Bay 35 with 27 seconds remaining.
It fell incomplete, and the Packers have the ball back and a chance to get into game-tying field-goal range.

With the game on the line, the Packers drew up a terrible play, then bungled the execution.
They lined up in shotgun on fourth-and-1 on what appeared to be an option for Jordan Love. Love handed off to Josh Jacobs, and they both ran in the same direction as Eagles defenders locked in. Jacobs fumbled on a hit in the backfield, and the Eagles took over possession and a chance to seal the win.
Adding insult to injury, the Packers were flagged for an illegal formation penalty that the Eagles declined.
A terrible play design and somehow worse execution.

A Packers offense that’s been conservative all night went for it on fourth-and-9 in a 3-0 game at the Philadelphia 41.
It did not work out. Jordan Love’s pass to Bo Melton fell incomplete, and the Packers have turned it over on down.

All-Pro Eagles tackle Lane Johnson suffered an ankle injury in the first half and left the game.
He walked out with his teammates after halftime, but remains on the sideline as Philadelphia’s offense works on the field. Backup Fred Johnson remains at right tackle for the Eagles. He’s officially listed as questionable to return.
