Just because a jaguar isn’t enjoying every inch of his freedom in the wild doesn’t mean that he isn’t having fun. Many zoos ensure their residents receive enrichment that is as close to their natural behaviors in the wild as possible. Obviously, they can’t set them up to hunt. But they can give them toys to stalk, pounce and drag around.
One fun-loving jaguar, Zean, is featured regularly on his zoo’s social media accounts, showcasing his unique talents for mischief and mayhem, generally termed as all-around orange cat tendencies. Luckily for us, the Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, Pa., posts new editions of their “orange and jobless” series so we can keep up with his antics.

Jaguar Wrestles Barrel
Zean is a resident of the Elmwood Park Zoo. The 12-year-old big cat is an active participant in the zoo’s breeding program alongside his mate, Inka. In fact, they were the parents of the twins born in 2017.
These days, he not only participates in the jaguar exhibit but is also a frequent presence on the zoo’s social media pages. One particularly hilarious series the zoo does for his incredibly orange cat-like antics is “Orange and Jobless,” set to the theme song of the long-running soap opera, The Young and the Restless.
In this more recent episode, Zean is attempting to pull a large black barrel from one part of his enclosure into his little kitty lair. However, attempts are not going as planned. While he got it through the first sliding door and down to the ground, getting into the lair isn’t working.
While he slides easily in there, the opening isn’t exactly made for large round objects. Even his handler questions his methods. He tries lengthwise, but it’s a little awkward, so he switches to standing it straight up. However, the barrel is a bit taller than the opening, which leaves him stuck with a barrel as his new front door.
The video ends there. Though I am sure with that level of determination, Zean is going to figure something out. He has nothing but time. Fans loved his silly antics.
One writes, “The way he fell splat and looked at you like you’re the problem”. He clearly was judging his handler for not doing more. It’s giving “if you can’t help, what are you here for?” vibes, and we are here for it.
While other fans just heard the iconic line from “Friends” that lives rent-free in many people’s heads: “Pivot, Pivot.” While he did a great deal of maneuvering, it didn’t seem like he was very successful. However, my favorite observation is that all the fans realize that orange cats are indeed orange cats, regardless of their size. There’s never been a truer statement.
