Best Place to People Watch: A Protest
Sure, we love spying our neighbors at play, during a casual stroll through the zoo, let’s say, or even when they’re standing on business while catching the Metro Rail to their workaday routines. But, we also love witnessing our fellow Houstonians when they’re motivated by a cause. We thrill when they demand and exact change. We enjoy seeing and feeling the fires which burn within us, we who brave 100-degree summers, torrential flooding and hellish motor vehicle traffic on the reg. We’re tough, dammit.
The best place in 2025 to see these badass Houstonians has been at a local protest. There’ve been plenty – from large, organized events like immigrants’ rights rallies and No Kings Day to smaller, grassroots collectives demanding better environmental health in Houston or bicyclists’ safety. Houstonians have mobilized to have their voices heard and, the best part is, their voices have rarely been drowned out by the din of violence. As a city, we have built a reputation for disagreeing peacefully and that has allowed Houstonians of every ilk to focus on the issues rather than some terroristic event to be splashed on social media and ratings-hungry news shows. Houstonians are smart, clever, diverse, innovative and – as suggested a few sentences ago – tough. We’re wired to handle difficult moments and 2025 USA is a difficult moment. Go to a protest and see how we’re an example to other U.S, cities.
