Another Republican might be throwing their hat in the ring for the race for New York governor in 2026.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman was at the state Capitol in Albany on Thursday as part of his statewide tour.
Blakeman said after winning his reelection bid for county executive last week, business and community leaders called him and urged him to enter the race for governor.
This comes nearly a week after U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik launched her gubernatorial campaign.
Stefanik has already picked up numerous endorsements from Republicans around the state.
Blakeman said if he gains enough support, he’ll jump into the race.
“I’m making my decision not based on what professional establishment politicians tell me to do,” Blakeman said. “I’m going to do it based on what I think is the best thing for the people of New York and the best thing for my party.”
Blakeman said he hopes to make a decision in the coming weeks.
Gov. Kathy Hochul is running for her second full term and is facing a primary challenge from Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado.
