The Federal Aviation Administration has lifted a ground stop for arriving flights at Philadelphia International Airport after a ship in the Delaware River briefly prevented incoming planes from landing.

A spokesperson said a ship anchored in the river obstructed approaching planes on one of the airport’s runways for landing.

The ship was 115 feet long and was too high for planes to approach the runway, the airport said. The spokesperson compared the ship to a tall crane that would prevent an incoming plane from landing.

Chopper 3 was over the Delaware River, showing a large ship in the river near the airport.

A ground stop was issued until around 5:30 p.m. Friday and was lifted shortly after.

The ground stop did not impact departures from PHL, the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said a tugboat arrived at the scene and helped move the ship up the river.

The airport said ships this size move along the Delaware regularly and can sometimes close a runway for a short period. The spokesperson said the ground stop was issued because the boat was anchored in the river.
