The holiday season is a great time to give back to the community, and in Downtown LA, there are plenty of opportunities available to help fellow Angelenos. Whether it is volunteering for a specific event or helping a nonprofit’s everyday needs, Downtown LA has lots of places for people to help out their community. Check out three below that support the homeless in Downtown.

The Midnight Mission

Located in the heart of Skid Row, The Midnight Mission has several volunteer opportunities during the holiday season for good samaritans wanting to serve unhoused individuals and families.

“Volunteers are the heart of The Midnight Mission, helping us serve those in need across Los Angeles every day,” the nonprofit said on its website. “By giving your time, you provide essential support to our guests and program participants, helping them take steps toward self-sufficiency — all while experiencing the deep rewards of making a difference.”

On Thanksgiving Day, The Midnight Mission is hosting a street festival that will bring together community members, volunteers and local organizations to serve holiday meals and provide support to those in need.

The Midnight Mission is working tirelessly beyond the holiday season as well. It relies on volunteer groups daily to assist with meal services, giveaways and special projects.

Union Rescue Mission

The Union Rescue Mission’s mission is to end the cycle of homelessness through providing care, emergency services, education and job training and additional support. The Christian organization has served over 5,000 individuals, housing over 1,200 people nightly in its three locations.

“Whether you come as an individual or with a group, your presence offers connection, dignity and a powerful reminder to our guests that they are seen, valued, and deeply worthy of care,” the Union Rescue Mission said on its website.

Those wanting to give back can volunteer with the Union Rescue Mission. All new potential volunteers must compete a virtual child abuse training, go through a live scan, sign off on the Union Rescue Mission Child Protection Policy and complete three months of service in the kitchen. The organization is also asking for donations for its “Thanksgiving Wish List.”

St. Francis Center

Since 1972, the St. Francis Center has provided relief and support to the homeless community, feeding, serving and walking alongside them in the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of the poor. Located on Hope Street, the nonprofit organization works directly with unhoused or extremely low-income individuals and families. Volunteers see firsthand the challenges of the homeless community. Volunteers can help serve breakfast or in the pantry. During the pantry program, volunteers sort through donated food products and make to-go pantry boxes to be distributed to families, individuals, and students in need.

“Much more than a soup kitchen or a food pantry, we offer a unique range of services to sustain and empower those in need and engaging volunteer opportunities in Los Angeles,” its website said.. “Welcoming all with joy, dignity and compassion, we dedicate ourselves every day to Serving Hope in our community.”

This year, the St. Francis Center of Los Angeles is hosting a Thanksgiving feast — last year, it served almost 400 meals. People can donate food items through its Amazon wishlist or donate directly to the center.

Tip for Volunteering This Holiday Season

Volunteer requests increase every holiday season. Make sure to register early, as organizations can often fill slots ahead. Also, be prepared to be flexible — holiday shifts might be outside of regular hours, requiring early morning work, or involve preparation before the actual date. Dress appropriately and make sure to know what is needed ahead of time, and check age requirements. If food service is full, consider donating, gift wrapping or administrative work — any help supports the organization’s cause.
