As temperatures drop and Americans plan their winter getaways, cost and convenience are taking center stage.

WalletHub’s latest study ranks the most affordable U.S. cities for winter travel, and the results may surprise you. Chicago tops the list for cold-weather destinations, while Las Vegas takes first place among warm-weather spots.

A Warmer, Milder Winter — and Affordable Options

Most of the U.S. can expect a mild and uneventful winter this year, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. That’s good news for travelers, especially those seeking budget-friendly destinations that are easy to reach.

Don’t Miss:

WalletHub analyzed nearly 70 of the largest metro areas across the country, grouping them into “cold” and “warm” categories. Each city was evaluated across 37 key metrics, including flight affordability, local costs, attractions, weather, and safety.

The goal, according to WalletHub, was to find destinations that are both affordable and accessible, without compromising on things to do once you arrive.

Chicago Leads the Cold-Weather Rankings

Chicago earned the top spot for cold-weather travelers this year. The Windy City offers direct flights from major U.S. hubs for as little as $205 and no connections — making it one of the most cost-efficient options.

WalletHub’s analysis highlights Chicago’s balance of affordability and entertainment. The city ranks first for attractions, with an abundance of winter-friendly activities like ice skating, live music, and cozy dining spots. Chicago also boasts the lowest property crime rate among the 32 cold-weather destinations in the study, making it a safe and vibrant option for holiday visitors.

Atlanta, Washington, D.C., St. Louis, and Cincinnati round out the top five cold-weather destinations, offering travelers a mix of urban attractions and moderate winter temperatures.

Las Vegas Shines for Warm-Weather Seekers

For those looking to swap snow boots for sunshine, Las Vegas ranks as the best warm-weather winter destination in the study. While flights to Vegas cost slightly more — starting around $349 — Sin City compensates with low hotel rates and endless entertainment options. WalletHub found that a three-star room averages just $64 per night during the winter travel season.

Las Vegas scored highly for its variety of attractions, including amusement parks, shopping centers, and outdoor activities like golf and biking. It also ranks first for warm-weather activities overall, offering plenty to do without breaking the bank.

San Diego, Austin, Dallas, and Phoenix follow Vegas on the warm-weather list, each offering their own blend of affordability, sunshine, and cultural appeal.

Affordable Adventures for Every Traveler

“Whether you love to have a chill in your bones during the winter travel season or prefer to escape to somewhere sunny, the top travel destinations can cost as little as $200 to $300 to reach by plane from major U.S. cities, with no connections,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo.

With airfares, hotel prices, and safety all factored in, WalletHub’s 2025 list gives travelers a data-backed guide for planning a memorable — and affordable — winter holiday. Whether it’s ice skating in Chicago or strolling under the desert sun in Las Vegas, this winter’s best trips don’t have to come with a hefty price tag.
