A passenger was killed and a driver severely injured in a multi-vehicle collision on a highway in Mission Valley, authorities said Friday.
The series of crashes, which involved three vehicles, occurred around 8:50 a.m. Thursday, when a driver behind the wheel of a black Nissan Sentra veered left while northbound on State Route 163 just north of Interstate 8 and crashed into a black Toyota Prius and a silver Prius. The silver Prius subsequently overturned, resulting in major injuries to the driver and passenger, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The passenger was pronounced deceased on scene, and the driver was taken in unspecified condition to a hospital for major injuries, CHP officials said. The names of the victims have not been released.
Alcohol and or drugs were not suspected to be a factor in the crash, the agency stated.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remained unclear, but an investigation was ongoing.
Authorities urged anyone with information to contact CHP San Diego at 858-293-6000 or Officer Kimberly Gonzalez at 858-293-6000, or kimberly.gonzalez@chp.ca.gov.
