The NFL’s annual My Cause My Cleats game hits close to home for Rams offensive lineman David Quessenberry.

This Sunday are the National Football League’s My Cause My Cleats games, with select NFL players designing and wearing cleats to raise awareness and support for nonprofit organizations and causes they support.

Los Angeles Rams offensive lineman David Quessenberry Jr., who grew up in Carlsbad, will be wearing cleats that hit close to home.

During Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Quessenberry will be wearing blue, yellow and reds cleats with images and slogans of American Legion Post 416 in Encinitas. David’s dad, David Quessenbery Sr. is the Commander of the American Legion Post 416 and a veteran who served 34 years in the U.S. Navy.

The NFL lineman shared with NBC 7 why he chose to honor his dad and Post 416.

“I’m so grateful for what they’ve done for our country and their service. They have special place down there in Encinitas and I just wanted to salute their service.”

Quessenberry helped design the cleats and said it was important for the words “post by the coast” to be featured prominently on the shoes.

“I wanted them to know that’s for you guys,” said Quessenberry. “The fellowship of places like that are so special, especially for people who have shared service and dedicated their lives to our country.”

When asked about the My Cause My Cleats games, David Sr. said, “This is a chance for every NFL player, whether regardless of who they are or where they stand in the pecking order, to do something for something that it is important to them, and David has become very fond of this post and it was his way of helping.”

David Sr. said he was very moved by his sons decision to feature American Legion Post 416 on his cleats and believes it will have a great impact on all the member of Post 416, which is a nonprofit that relies on donations to survive.

“We have a lot football fans of various teams and even if these fans here at the Post are peripheral to my family, it makes it more special for them, So in general, I think the reaction will be it’s pretty cool.”

Asked if the specially designed American Legion Post 416 cleats will make his play better?

Quessenberry said, “Guaranteed!”
