In the face of President Donald Trump vowing to end mail-in voting, Phoenix City Council has extended the contract for its mail-in ballot sorting system.

During Wednesday’s council meeting, the council unanimously approved a two-year extension to the contract with Runbeck Election Services, LLC for the ballot envelope sorting system designed to “process early ballots and other election materials in an efficient, accurate, and timely manner,” as city staff document states.

The Phoenix City Clerk Department conducts municipal elections for the city. Prior to the contract that begin in 2020, mail-in ballot envelopes were sorted manually by city staff.
