Phoenix-area freeways: Everything you need to know to get around
Several freeways traverse the Phoenix area, including many state routes that loop around the Valley, providing easy access to the different regions.

Motorists in metro Phoenix have a lot to be grateful for this weekend as no construction restrictions are scheduled for area freeways during the weekend before Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27.
There are zero mainline freeway closures and scheduled improvement projects between Nov. 21 and Nov. 24 in the Phoenix area, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
“Drivers should stay alert at all times, including when traveling in existing work zones,” read a statement from ADOT. “Be prepared for driving on wet pavement due to inclement weather conditions. Slow down and allow extra braking distance behind other vehicles.”
The National Weather Service forecast rain would continue to fall in Arizona following stormy weather Nov. 19 in the Valley that included hail and led to flight delays and property damage.
Here are ADOT’s road-checking options:
- The Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov allows travelers to map routes and see closures affecting travel time.
- The AZ511 app for Apple and Android mobile devices is a smartphone-friendly version of the Arizona Traveler Information site.
- Within Arizona, dialing 511 calls the Arizona Traveler Information line, which offers traffic reports. Just say what route you’re taking and the automated system will respond with traffic delay information. If 511 doesn’t work from a cellphone, dial 1-888-411-ROAD (7623). If you’re outside the U.S., dial 1-520-200-0105.
